The Challenge
This project focused on capturing the raw energy of Sebokeng’s street culture and translating it into a functional, high-performance retail experience for local skate wear and hardware.
I served as the lead developer and technical architect, responsible for the end-to-end delivery of the platform. This included:
Infrastructure & Security: Setting up the WordPress environment and integrating Payfast for secure, local South African payment processing.
Custom UI/UX Design: Using WP Bakery to craft a “street-style” dark-themed aesthetic that prioritised high-quality imagery and a relaxed, minimalist user flow.
E-Commerce Logic: Configuring WooCommerce to handle product variations (sizes for apparel and specs for boards) and implementing Gravity Forms for bespoke customer inquiries and specialised order requirements.
I am most proud of the aesthetic balance achieved between “street” and “professional.” It was rewarding to build a dark-themed interface that felt authentic to the township skate scene gritty and inspired while maintaining the lightning-fast load times and simple navigation required for a high-conversion e-commerce site.
The Challenge: Maintaining a “dark theme” without sacrificing readability or making the product images (which are often colourful) look out of place.
The Solution: I implemented a specific colour palette using deep charcoals and matte blacks rather than pure black, and used custom CSS to create subtle “industrial” borders and typography. This allowed the product photography to “pop” while keeping the “relaxed street” vibe intact.
The platform successfully went live on September 15, 2020, following a rigorous two week beta testing phase to ensure the mobile shopping experience was seamless for users on the go.
